Project Overview

Container Craft was commissioned by US Foods — one of America's largest foodservice distributors — to design and build a custom 20-foot shipping container mobile office. The unit needed to serve as a durable, job-site-ready workspace that could withstand demanding industrial environments while delivering the comfort and functionality of a traditional office.

The Challenge

US Foods operates distribution centers across the Midwest, and their teams frequently need on-site office space at active facilities. Traditional construction was too slow, too expensive, and too permanent for their needs. They needed a solution that was fully self-contained, climate-controlled, and transportable between locations as operational needs changed.

The Build

The 20-foot standard shipping container was stripped to its steel shell, then fully insulated and transformed into a functional workspace. The interior features exposed OSB walls — a deliberate design choice that delivers a rugged, industrial aesthetic while providing excellent thermal performance and long-term durability.

A custom L-shaped workstation was built directly into the layout, maximizing the available floor space and providing a practical work surface for on-site management, scheduling, and administrative tasks. The workstation was designed to accommodate multiple users simultaneously without crowding the space.

Electrical & Climate Control

The unit was equipped with surface-mounted electrical wiring, providing multiple outlets throughout the workspace for computers, chargers, and job-site equipment. LED lighting was installed for bright, energy-efficient illumination that reduces eye strain during long shifts.

A high-efficiency mini-split HVAC system was installed to provide reliable heating and cooling, ensuring year-round comfort regardless of external conditions — a critical requirement for units deployed across Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and other Midwest states with extreme seasonal temperature variations.

Access & Natural Light

A residential entry door with a secure locking mechanism provides safe, reliable access, while a sliding window brings in natural light and offers ventilation when needed. Both were chosen for their durability and ease of replacement — important considerations for a unit that may be relocated multiple times over its lifespan.

The Result

This container office is a turnkey solution for on-site operations — no foundation work, no construction delays, and no compromise on comfort. It can be placed on any flat surface, connected to a standard power supply, and put to work the same day it arrives.

For US Foods, the ability to relocate a fully equipped office unit between facilities as needs change is invaluable. This is the kind of operational flexibility that traditional construction simply cannot provide — and it's exactly why more companies across the Midwest are choosing custom container offices from Container Craft.
